OnceaYear, Still
Extraordinary–The 58
th
Anniversaryof SJACS
Preface
: Started from a humble
beginning in 1958, St. Joseph’sAnglo
Chinese School celebrated its 58
th
anniversary on 18
th
March 2016.
Although there was no grand, large-
scale celebrations, the day still
marked a watershed in the history of
our Alma Mater – after all, it was the
58
th
anniversary of a school founded
in 1958! As you’ll learn fromRoland Liu, a fellow St. Joe old boy and now an
English teacher at St. Joe, this year’s celebration was still unique and no less
joyful, and very “St. Joe”.

When you are inmiddle age or late adulthood, you probably do not
treat your birthday as something special. The anniversary day of our
school, nevertheless, is unique every year. Indeed, there are things
that we do year after year, but if you take a close look, you will realise
there is ahighlight every year.
The day started with a usual
morning assembly, followed by a
mass and prize presentation in
the school hall. And while
students were still cheering for
the award winners, the
highlight of the day was
awaiting at the ground floor.
Thanks to Principal Poon, we finally had an ice-cream van
especially for our anniversary! After the ceremony in the hall, students
were informed about free ice-cream, and their eyes were shining
already. They were expected to get crazy because of free ice-cream,
but it was unexpected that even our fifth formers suddenly became
children again, running towards the ice-cream van as if it was a
competition. And yes, coincidently, the first
student getting to the van was a Hong
Kong triple jump teammember!
The surprise was over, and it came
other big events. The teacher-student
football game has always been a focus on
every anniversary day, but the teacher-
student dodgeball game has only a two-
year history. Be it dodgeball or football,
everyone was only aiming for a laugh and
no one would be disappointed. With all the
students surrounding the football court,
together with the best weather of the day,
it was simply just another joyful moment of
the celebration.
Something can go on for long history
that it becomes tradition, while new
elements can be immersed every year. No
matter what nature of event is, you see
smileys all around St Joseph’s Anglo-
Chinese School. This is our character, this
