30-Year
Reunionof
theClass
of 1986

Andrew Lee
(’86)
In the evening of
22 March 2016, 42 of
us old boys from the
Class of 1986 gathered at the reincarnated Kai Yip
Chinese Restaurant (it now bears a fancier name),
where we’d sometimes go for lunch 30 odd years ago as
St. Joe boys, to celebrate our 30th anniversary since
graduation.
The
day’s
activities
actually
started
earlier in the
afternoon
with a small
group of us
taking part
in a guided
tour of the
new
SJACS
campus
organised by
Wilfred Leung, a fellow 86 old boy
and alumni manager of SJACS, and led by SJACS
principal Mr. PoonWingKeung.
No sooner had the guided tour finished, the
reunion began. As we entered the dining room, all
old boys were required to perform a small ritual –
putting on a sticker with our name and class
written on it on and wearing the commemorative
pin especially made for the event. Some
commented that it looked as though we were
going to school for the first time.
We were
delighted to
have the brief
presence of
retired
Principal Mr.
Kenneth
Chan at the
start,
who,
albeit
not
joining us for
dinner, came
to pay us a
visit. We were
also very glad
to have Mr.
Lam Shan Pui
(Chinese teacher of 5C & 5D), Mr. Silvanus Lo (English
teacher of 5C), Mr. Yim
Chun Leung (maths teacher of 5D), Mr. Yip Kai To (form
master and maths teacher of 5E and maths teacher of
5B) and Mr. Yuen Wah Chai (form master and English
teacher of 5D and EPA teacher of 5B) join our
celebration.
The reunion brought together those of us fromHong
Kong as well as a few who resided in the US, Canada
andmainlandChina –many we hadn’t seen for some 30
years or longer. We all got into a frenzy of catching up
with our oldmates. Later on, the hustle and bustle had to
give way as we settled down and got ready for dinner.
After a group photo session and a quick game of
identifying old schoolmates using our 85-86 class photos
as clues, we invited Mr. Yuen to lead us in saying our
grace. With that, the feast began. Halfway through the
evening,
a
lucky draw was
drawn by Mr.
Lamwith a new
SJACS
athletics team
jacket as the
prize. Winner
Chung Chi Kit
of 5B was
presented the
coveted prize
byMr. Yuen.
Now that our stomachs were filled, the hustle and
bustle came alive again with the help of an abundant
supply of redwine. Excitement and laughter continued
to echo in the dining room until the restaurant had to
close shop.
Still high-spirited, some of us retraced our steps
as teenage St. Joe boys from 30 odd years ago and
walked across the footbridge that led us to the old St.
Joe campus on Kwun Tong Road, where we took
pictureswith our AlmaMater lookingover us. Finally, it
was time to bid farewell to each other but we also
pledged to have an even greater reunion next time.
So stay tuned!
