REV. BRO. PAUL SUN MEMORIAL HALL
Monday, 19th March 2012 was St. Joseph’s Day. It was the 54th Anniversary of our Alma Mater. A ceremony was held to celebrate this important day and also to officially name the new hall ‘Rev. Bro. Paul Sun Memorial Hall.’
It was a fine day to receive a very warm turnout of participants, including former teaching staff and old boys. The ceremony on the morning of 19th March was presided over by Rev. Father V. Grioni, who led the prayers. After a welcome speech by the new School Supervisor, Mr. Irving Koo, Peter Yeung, Chair of the Josephian Association, addressed the gathering, followed by Matthias Li, Chair of the Rev. Bro. Paul Sun Education Foundation. Coming from Toronto for this special occasion, Matthew Poon, Chair of the alumni association in Ontario, Canada, spoke on the life of Brother Paul.
The presentation of donations followed. First, it was the Foundation to hand over a cheque in the sum of HK$500,000 to the School. As a result of running a booth at the last Lunar New Year bazaar, the Students Association was able to make a donation to the Foundation. A cheque was handed over by the Students Association President to the Foundation.
It is important to report that in his speech, Matthias mentioned about the Foundation’s next initiative for the School, which is a plan to establish a number of scholarships to encourage students to excel and live true to our motto ‘ad astra.’
A brief ceremony was held at the entrance of the hall to officially unveil the plaque. Soon, a new plaque will be added to describe the life of Brother Paul. The last part of the program was a guided tour for those who have not seen the new campus in detail and some refreshments served in the School Museum on the Ground Floor, newly renovated under the sponsorship of the Foundation.
Among the guests are Madam Kwok Wen, Principal of SJACPS, ex-principal Kenneth Chan, and former teaching staff, Mr. & Mrs. Ko Kwong Fai (coming from Texas), Mr. Matthew Chan, Mr. William Cheng, Mr. Lawrence Li, Mr. Chau Kin Ping, Mr. Cheung King Cheung, and Mr. Yuen Wah Chai. Many old-boys turned up in support. Besides directors of the Josephian Association and Trustees of the Foundation, there were Dr Bobby Ling (coming from Macau) as well as Mr. George Yao and two classmates from his Class of ’62, the very first graduates of SJACS.
On this very occasion, we were especially delighted to see Richard Ko of the Class of ’72 turning up with his wife, Pauline, who came all the way from Boston after an absence of almost 40 years. After learning more about the work of the Foundation, Richard gave a donation, in the great Josephian family spirit.
We are very grateful to Principal Paul Yeung and his staff for the excellent arrangements on 19th March.
