Message from Alumni US West

In recent months the Association has been directing efforts to boost or rekindle the Josephian Family Spirit among old boys both here and overseas. As a direct result, our old boys in California have answered our call, forming a body called ‘Old Boys US West.’ Matthias Li (SJACS’72) has acted as a roving ambassador of sorts for JA and has made several visits to San Francisco meanwhile. Now, US West is organizing regular parties, and donations have been collected and passed to us here, both for the Statue Project and also the Foundation. Marco Lui was the last to pay a visit to Hong Kong, and Andrew Li took him to the new campus, which he had heard so much about from Sydney Yeung, who visited the new campus earlier to witness the statue’s installation.

Below is a message from their convener, Francis Lau:

Hi, everyone,

Happy New Year!
The US West Josephian Old Boys met again on 2/25/2011 at the beautifully remodeled King Wah Restaurant in Daly City, California. This will become our regular quarterly meeting for the US West Old Boys. Our next gathering will be on Friday, 4/8/2011. We hope everyone can plan ahead and be able to attend our next meeting. The date is not being written on stone. Feel free to email your suggestions.

While we enjoyed the good foods great company sharing wonderful happy memories, we all were grateful and honored to have a classroom being named after us.
We all are all the more committed to keep helping the school to become better now that we have "OUR NAME" on it.
HOW? This is a big question we all raised during the better part of the dinner.
We were also wondering about the causes of our once so glamorous school becoming what it is today.
We were brainstorming on things we could do to help the school to regain its top reputation in the old days:

(1).......Make our representation in the School Board stronger
(2).......Make our Old Boys Association more united and stronger
(3).......Make our Foundation financially stronger
(4).......Introduce "English Teaching" back to our school
(5).......Regain our top rating in 4 years.

Sorry that these are just some over simplified brainstorming ideas coming out while we were eating and chatting. It may not have been carefully thought out and probably no planning at this time or we may not even know the full stories. But it is all done in good faith and with good intentions from all of us, the alumni in this part of the world.
It is a start, and we all can help and contribute to its success.
Andrew (Li).- Let’s hear your words of wisdom on (1) to (5), please!
Matthias - How about your suggestions for all of us (Old Boys) in Northern America (US West, Van & Tor, etc)? To be united together to make our voice from this part of the word heard by the school.
We were also thinking to have an annual Old Boys’ reunion here in North America including Van & Tor. How can we all join together and ask the school to make it an "English Teaching" school again?
We understand that these are all challenging issues and not an easy task and after all, "Rome is not built in one day". But this is a start.
Yesterday's gathering included:
Joseph Chan
Chan Kai Him (ex-Teacher)
Joseph Yick
Marco Lui
Raymond Ho's wife
Raymond Ho
Andrew Ling
Sydney Yeung
Francis Lau

Thanks to Joseph Yick's generosity, he donated a few of the school items he brought back from Hong Kong to be sold with all proceeds going to the Foundation. This is a very small sum but again, this is just a start and guys, I am thinking about opening an account for all this petty cash and transferring these moneys to the Foundation from time to time.

Thanks to all of you
Regards,
Francis
