Dear Josephians,
We are aware that a number of Josephians, especially those who used to be members of the Old Boys Association ('OBA'), are asking about what has become of the OBA and the current status of the Bro. Paul Sun Education Fund ('Fund') as many have made donations in the past.
At our request, an official statement from the School has recently been published on the Schools' website (www.sjacs.edu.hk) and is attached below. While it may not have answered all questions, it serves to clarify as follows:
- Due to various reasons, the OBA became inactive over the years. In the interim, Peter Yeung (SJACS'75) and others thought it would be best to form a corporate body. The Josephian Association was thus incorporated as an alumni body for all Josephians. Today, the Josephian Association is the official alumni body in Hong Kong recognized by St. Joseph's A-C School.
- Under the now inactive OBA, some funds from past donations still remain. An explanation is now available accounting for such donations and the intended application.
We also understand from Chan Ming Hung (SJACS '81), currently teaching at SJACS, that:
- The OBA was deregistered with the Hong Kong Police in 2005.
- The OBA membership database has been lost.
- After operating for a number of years, the Fund still has a remaining balance of some HK$200,000 in the ICBC(Asia) Bank. The other signatories are the School Supervisor and the Principal, Peter Ng Tsz Kei (SJACS '74) and Chan Chi Ming (SJACS '87), both teaching at SJACS.
- The Fund no longer accepts donations. The remaining funds, however, will still be allocated for annual scholarship awards until it is exhausted. New donations are, meanwhile, directed to the newly established Rev. Bro. Paul Sun Education Foundation, an officially approved tax-exempt charitable organization, established by the Josephian Association in late 2009.
Sincerely,
The Josephian Association
