With a view to restoring our School’s long tradition as an English-speaking institute, it is the wish of the alumni to render support to the School in an effort to boost the use of English for all Josephians. Our efforts have eventually paid off with the holding of a seminar in English on 27th April 2010, organized by the English Society for all F.6 Josephians.
The topic is ‘The Learning of English and its Importance in the Workplace.’ A very well written invitation was sent out by Dennis Yeung, Chairman of the English Society, to invite various old boys to attend. Since it was a normal working day, the efforts made by the eight old boys who came to the seminar were especially appreciated by all. They were Andrew Li (’72), Michael Leung (’79), Ng Man Kin (’81), Roger Lam and Edmund Lee (’82), Joseph Tsoi (’87), Albert Kan (’95) and Stephen Sheung (’01), representing graduates spanning some 30 years of our School’s history.
Thanks to English teacher, Franky Chan and other teaching staff, the arrangement made was excellent. The seminar kicked off smoothly with the guests split into two groups, taking turns to conduct 40-minute sessions with the two F.6 classes in their classrooms. The tempo was somewhat slow in the first session but improved greatly as everyone got into the swing of things. The seminar was quite interactive with many questions asked and views exchanged. Most questions were to be expected, e.g. the older Josephians’ individual backgrounds, their experience learning English while at school, how to overcome difficulties encountered, etc. All in all, it was good practice communicating in English and a lot of fun as well for all. Everyone came away with the distinct impression that it was over all too quickly and there should be a next seminar soon.
In view of the success of this seminar, the Josephian Association will be working further with teachers to organize more such functions for Josephians in the months to come. Ad astra!
