SJACS English Talent Contest 2011

Report filed by Andrew Li

Last year I was invited to see a Talent Show. I thought that was rather cute the way it was put together in a fun but somewhat haphazard way. This year, I was pleasantly surprised to receive an invitation from Jeffrey Yiu, Chair of the English Society, to act as one of the judges. This year’s contest is co-organized by the English Society and the Students Union, featuring 10 performances spread over two lunch hours on May 17 and 18.

The weather turned pleasant, and that was a good start. I did not really have any firm expectations. I went with a relaxed frame of mind hoping to be entertained. The other judges were:

Miss Holroyd Caroline

Mr. Moses Tsang

Mr. Carson Salaroli

Mr. Eddy Li

On both days, the event kicked off punctually with contestants going on stage one after another according to the program. All were singing performances, either solo or in groups, and mostly accompanied by the guitar or the piano. I must say I was impressed by the vastly improved standards shown this year. This was especially so since there was only limited time to prepare.

The performances in order were:

Group 1 from Form4D singing 'All out of love'

Group 2 from Form5E singing “Star Wars” through A capella

Group 3 from Form4E singing 'Apologize “

Group 4 from Form1E singing “ MTR Song “

Group 5 from Form3C singing “ Shining Friends”

Group 6 from Form5B singing 'Creep”

Group 7 from Form4B singing an English Song

Group 8 from Class 6B singing a combined song

Group 9 from Class 5D singing “ My Love”

Group 10 from Class 5B singing “ Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love For You “

On both days, there was an excellent turnout in the audience, showing great spirits and good cheers. I would most definitely rate this event as a success, proving once again Josephians are well capable of showing results when called upon to perform. Credit must, however, go to the organizers and the head of the English Department, ms Grace Mak. I have good reasons to believe the boys would be able to improve yet again when the time comes for another contest the following year.
