Charity Basketball Tournament 2010

The first Bro. Paul Sun Education Foundation Charity Basketball Tournament was held on November 28, 2010. With the deep love in basketball throughout the SJACS history, the competition attracted twelve teams from the class of 1988 alumni to current SJACS school team players. After a full day of matches, Small Yu Team (class of 1998-2000) was crowned champions after beating Nam Chun (class of 1997-1998) by 22:19.

Players started to fill up the courts and do warm-up shooting exercises from as early as 9 a.m. – an hour before the competition’s official start time. We were very pleased to have Principal, Mr. Paul Yeung, as our special guest for the opening tip-off ceremony. The morning group round session officially began after the ceremony. The best two teams in each group were qualified for the elimination round in the afternoon.

While the games were highly competitive and somewhat physical, players and referees showed mutual respect and created a very positive competitive atmosphere. Meanwhile, the courtsides were packed with the waiting teams, alumni and their family members and friends as spectators cheering for the games.

In our championship game, Small Yu Team started off very strongly and outscored Nam Chun by over eight points in the first five minutes. Led by Jason Chan Chun Man, Nam Chun was able to narrow the deficit and leveled the scores very shortly. However, Small Yu Team’s great teamwork helped them to take another lead and become the champions of the first Brother Paul Sun Education Foundation charity basketball event. In our second runners-up game, six-foot-four centre Chan Chi Ho and Eddie Ngan Hung Bun led Team 1988 to beat Powerful Ghost by 32:21, despite four three-point shots made by Powerful Ghost’s Chung Ka Chun in the game.

Special thanks to the concerted efforts by our referees Carter Ng (’94), Rod Sim (’88), Ginco Sze (’94) and Peter Yue (’88), as well as our courtside statisticians Frank Choi (F.6A), Stanley Choi (F.6A) and Tai Ho Yin (F.6B) for making this first basketball tournament very smooth and successful.

With the positive feedback and experience from this tournament, we truly look forward to hosting other basketball games and tournaments in our new SJACS campus in 2011. We hope to see you all on the courts with us.

Ad astra!
