Latest News - SJACS Graduation Ceremony 2009-2010

This year’s SJACS Graduation Ceremony took place on Friday, Jun 4. It was, in fact, a special occasion, being the last graduation held on the old campus. Furthermore, there will only be F.7 graduates next year and no F.5 graduates leaving school because of the new '3-3-4' curriculum.

The event was blessed with fantastic weather that day, well attended by parents and Josephians. It was a meticulously prepared program (see below). The keynote speaker this year is alumnus CHAN Kai Ming (SJACS’74), Secretary General of the Red Cross, Hong Kong. The students gave him a rousing welcome and he responded with a most uplifting speech. He remembered the old school days, the constant efforts to stay ahead, and his time as a member of the school Red Cross, a far cry from his position today as the head of the Red Cross in Hong Kong. The leitmotiv was the importance of being a team member, one remains at the back giving support but who can still effectively contribute without being at the forefront and in the limelight. He extolled graduates to follow his example. It was most heart-warming.

Following the giving out of graduation diplomas, other guests of honor were called upon to present graduates with various certificates of excellence, including Josephian Association Chairman, Peter YEUNG (SJACS’75), and fellow Director and representative to the School’s Management Committee, Andrew LI (SJACS’72).

A farewell speech was given by Dennis YEUNG on behalf of the student body. This was followed by a most excellent valedictorian speech jointly delivered by graduates Richardino CHIEN and Anson KWONG.

Students then put on a performance to entertain the guests. Speaking excellent English, lower-form students Gabriel GALLARDO and Benjamin WU announced the various performers. Among the best were students Isaac LI and Matthew LAU, who delivered a very impressive speech rendition of a dialogue between two teenagers who befriended each other in a concentration camp in the last War. To top it all off was a lively break-dance that won much applause.

All present were impressed by the entire program conducted throughout in English of a high standard. This is especially important at a time when we are striving to increase English language proficiency for the entire school and to present to parents our school once again as a SCHOOL OF CHOICE.

The ceremony came to a fitting close with the singing of Auld Lang Syne.
